2021 Mazda3 vs. 2022 Honda Civic: Refinement at the Wheel

With unrivalled styling, segment-leading power and performance, a premium interior and superior comfort, it’s easy to see why the Mazda3 has won AJAC’s Car of the Year. This compact could easily compete with premium cars in luxury segments, but it is offered with a value-packed proposition that its rivals cannot beat.

Here, we compare the 2021 Mazda3 to the redesigned 2022 Honda Civic.

The 2021 Mazda3 gives you more choice under the hood

Mazda has always been a performance-oriented automaker. And all of its models benefit from state-of-the-art powertrains paired with uniquely refined driving dynamics.

To begin, the Mazda3 GX and GS trims include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that outputs 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Three Civic sedan trims also include a 2.0-litre, but they provide less torque with only 138 lb-ft. This is a serious disadvantage when accelerating or passing on the highway.

The Mazda3 GT produces 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque with its base 2.5-litre four-cylinder. These numbers all exceed the Civic sedan's standard powertrain, as well as its other available engine, the notoriously unreliable 1.5-litre turbocharged unit which only provides 180 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque.

The Mazda3's third and most delightful engine is a 2.5L turbo that generates up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. It is available in select trims and offers thrilling accelerations, but more importantly, it is way more powerful than what the Civic sedan has to offer at the moment.

Inside, the Mazda3 surrounds its occupants with a highly intuitive infotainment system, as well as superior comfort and a build quality that is far more advanced than what you will find in the budget-oriented Civic interior.

The 2021 Mazda3 offers unique features

All-wheel-drive is important in our climate, especially during long winters. It keeps your family safe, but it also gives the driver more confidence on the road on dry pavement. Although AWD is quite common among crossovers, it is less common in the compact car segment. The Mazda3 Is available with AWD, while the Civic isn’t. This could be a deal breaker for many Canadians.
