Interior space
With all seats in place and the rear seats folded down, the 2023 Mazda CX-9 has more cargo space. The CX-9 has 2,017 liters of cargo space when the rear seats are folded, while the CX-5 has 1,680 liters of cargo space. As for passenger space, the Cx-9 offers a third row of seats which is already an impressive advantage, but overall the three-row SUV is more spacious in just about every way.
Performance
In both the Mazda CX-9 and CX-5, a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers 227 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. This engine is standard equipment on the CX-9, while it is an option on the CX-5. A non-turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque powers the CX-5. In their respective segments, both Mazda SUVs offer plenty of power and performance, and both deliver some of the fastest accelerations and most confident passing.
Fuel consumption is higher on the CX-9, but it has more power. The CX-5 averages 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers and on the highway it averages 8 liters per 100 kilometers. The CX-9 averages 11.6 l/100 km in the city and 9.9 l/100 km on the highway with the 2.5-litre while the V6 averages 13.8 l/100 km in the city and 10.2 l/100 km on the highway. There’s no doubt the CX-5 is the more efficient option of the two.
