2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Subaru Forester: Premium Style and Capability

The 2021 CX-5 is a compact crossover designed for drivers who want to lean towards luxury without the premium-brand price. The sophisticated styling, confident powertrains, and long line of advanced technology await you every trip. If you want a little more performance, the CX-5 also features a turbocharged engine that delivers a push of torque that is admired by driving enthusiasts.

The CX-5 is in a very competitive segment. Here, we compare the CX-5 to the 2021 Subaru Forester.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 makes a wonderful first impression

Despite competing in the same segment, the differences between these two vehicles are apparent from the start. The CX-5 exudes sophistication, with crafted curves and lines that blend together as an art form. On the contrary, the Forester's boxy profile and simple trim certainly don't make the same statement, especially for a vehicle that is similarly priced. On style alone, the CX-5 is light years ahead in value.

Driving position and interior comfort is also much superior inside the Mazda CX-5, with more refined materials and textures throughout, the CX-5 feels more like a luxury SUV than the Subaru Forester.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is about power and torque

The impressive CX-5 model lineup features two powertrains that include impressive capabilities. Four grades feature a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that outputs 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The Signature and 100 (available on the GT) add a turbocharger that increases output to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

The Forester includes a single powertrain in the lineup, a 2.5-litre engine that generates 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. This is much less output than anything the CX-5 offers even in its base models.

Plus, the Forester has another powertrain disadvantage: it is equipped with a continuously variable transmission that provides anemic driving dynamics. The CX-5, however, uses a sporty six-speed automatic transmission available with paddle shifters.

Every new CX-5 receives the Mazda Unlimited Mileage Warranty. This special coverage has no mileage limits for important coverage areas. This includes an unlimited-mileage 3-year New Vehicle, 3-year Roadside Assistance, 5-year Powertrain and 7-year Anti-Perforation warranties.
