2021 Mazda3 Sedan or Sport: Which Body Style is Best for You?

The Mazda3 series is one of the most popular compact four-door vehicle lineups in Canada. Attractive styling, plentiful standard equipment, and fun performance are just a few reasons why. However, the Sedan and Sport have differences that make them unique. Here, we look at these differences so you can make the best choice for your needs.

For starters, the Sedan takes on a sporty four-door look with a traditional trunk at the rear. The Sport is a stylish hatchback with a fifth door in back. Body types are among the most obvious differences between both vehicles – but the whatever the style you choose, you will benefit from outstanding driving dynamics.

The 2021 Mazda3 Sedan is more efficient

Both vehicles offer the same powertrains throughout their model lineups. These include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that increases output to 186 horsepower, and a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that generates up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged engine is optional on GT models and standard on the 100th Anniversary Edition. Both vehicles also offer six-speed automatic and manual transmissions.

If fuel economy is very important to you, the Sedan is generally more efficient. The FWD, manual-transmission 2.0-litre powertrain results in a rating of 8.7/6.4 L/100 km (city/highway) in the Sedan, whereas it increases to 8.7/6.6 in the Sport. The same engine with the automatic transmission in FWD drive models achieves 8.4/6.6 in the Sedan and 8.6/6.7 in the Sport. The Sedan is also more efficient with the AWD 2.5-litre powertrain. However, both have the same fuel economy rating with the Turbo powertrain.

The 2021 Mazda3 Sport has more room for what you need

The Sport Hatchback offers more interior cargo volume than the Sedan. If your lifestyle is adventurously busy, the Sport is a better choice. It enables more cargo flexibility and capacity of up to 1,334 litres with the rear seats down and 569 litres with the same seats up. The Sedan's trunk features 374 litres of volume, increasing to 940 litres with folded rear seats. Both vehicles have virtually the same front and rear occupant seating dimensions.

Depending on the trim level, both vehicles have nearly identical standard/optional safety, comfort, convenience equipment inside and out.
