2021 Mazda3 vs. 2021 Toyota Corolla: Choosing a Great Compact Car
November 13 2020,
The Mazda3 improves in the 2021 model year with turbo power, sporty styling, and refined driving characteristics that makes this a truly unique compact sedan. Two models now offer the Skyactiv-G 2.5 T Dynamic Turbo engine that produces up to 250 horsepower, and several models make all-wheel drive available – a critical piece of equipment during long winters. Here, we compare it to the 2021 Toyota Corolla.
The 2021 Mazda3 is a performer
The 2021 Mazda3 offers a suite of powertrains that shadow what the Corolla offers. Standard on the GS and GX, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder outputs 155 efficient horsepower and 150 lb-ft of responsive torque. The GT moves up to a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that generates 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This engine is also offered as an option with the GS.
When you are hungry for power, The GT (optional) and 100th Anniversary Edition feature a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that pushes the envelope for performance. Capable of 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on 93 octane, this engine offers a level of performance well above anything the Corolla offers.
The Corolla offers three engines. The entry powertrain creates 139 horsepower, and the hybrid has 121 horsepower which doesn't reach the Mazda3’s power levels. The Corolla's top engine only generates 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. This torque number is practically matched by the Mazda3's entry powertrain.
The Mazda3 offers six-speed automatic and manual transmission options. Despite the Corolla's CVT and manual transmission options, all Mazda3 automatic owners receive features such as manual shift mode and a drive selection switch. This equipment provides a more personalized driving experience.
With less power and no AWD available, the Mazda3 surpasses the Corolla. And let’s just say it outright, the Mazda3 is much more fun to drive!
The 2021 Mazda3 is just right inside
Some assume that the Mazda3 sacrifices interior volume compared to the Corolla because of its much better performance characteristics. However, the numbers say otherwise. The Mazda3 includes more front shoulder room, rear headroom, and more rear legroom in some models.
The Mazda3 offers available equipment perks that you won't find in the Corolla lineup, as well as the opportunity to own a piece of history with the 100th Anniversary Edition.
