Here’s Our First Look at the New 2024 Mazda CX-90
February 06 2023,
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is an entirely new product from Mazda since it not only introduces a new name, but also an entirely new architecture and new powertrains. Here’s what you should know about it.
Entirely new under the skin
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the first vehicle to use Mazda’s new rear-wheel drive-based platform and also the first to use both the brand-new inline-six-cylinder engine and the e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain. This makes the CX-90 more dynamic and fun to drive than most of its competitors whose all-wheel drive systems are front-wheel drive based. The new turbocharged 3.3L inline-six-cylinder engine delivers 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, as well as an impressive level of fuel efficiency due to the M-Hybrid Boost system. This technology adds a small electric motor between the gasoline engine and the new 8-speed automatic transmission which provides a boost of torque during acceleration while also powering the vehicle directly at slow speeds.
A new plug-in hybrid version
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is also available with another entirely new powertrain, the e-Skyactiv PHEV. This system uses a modified version of the popular Skyactiv 2.5L four-cylinder engine and a 17.8 kWh battery in order to provide 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Mazda has yet to announce the official electric range that will be possible with this powertrain, but most drivers who charge the battery at home should be able to complete their daily commutes without using fuel.
A more luxurious vehicle
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the most luxurious vehicle ever offered by the brand in North America. This can be seen via all of the CX-90’s standard features, but also by the quality of its materials and the refinement of its design. Indeed, the interior of the CX-90 can be upholstered in Nappa leather and trimmed with light wood appliqués and tone-on-tone fabric accents. In addition, all of the driver assistance and active safety features found on other Mazda models are available and most of them are part of the list of standard equipment.
