The Differences Between the Mazda CX-50 and the Mazda CX-9
August 12 2022,
If you are looking for a new large or mid-size SUV, the Mazda CX-50 or the CX-9 could be a good choice for you depending on your criteria.
If you need more space, the CX-9 is for you
The Mazda CX-9 is the largest vehicle in the Mazda lineup and the only one to feature a third row of seats. This means that it is capable of carrying up to 7 passengers or 2,016 litres of cargo. Even with up to five passengers on board, the CX-9 offers 1,082 litres of space, which is enough to carry all of the luggage these passengers would need for a road trip. This doesn’t mean that the Mazda CX-50 is not practical, however, because it offers more leg room to both front and rear passengers and still has a respectable 1,594-liter cargo capacity with the rear seats folded.
If you want more fun behind the wheel, the CX-50 is ideal
The Mazda CX-50 is one of the most fun-to-drive SUVs in its segment due to its lower weight, its athletic chassis, and its available turbocharged engine. Compared to the Mazda CX-9, the CX-50 can be up to 324 kilograms (714 pounds) lighter, which allows it to be more dynamic and to have sportier handling. Considering both models can be powered by the same turbocharged 2,5L engine making up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel, the CX-50 is quicker than the CX-9. On the other hand, the higher weight and more relaxed handling of the Mazda CX-9 makes it more comfortable on long highway drives.
If you prefer more luxury, the CX-9 can deliver
The Mazda CX-9 benefits from its status at the top of the Mazda hierarchy to offer the highest level of luxury of any Mazda vehicle. This is most evident in the Signature trim level, which includes specific items such as a Nappa leather upholstery, real rosewood accents, an illuminated front grille, and a center console for the second-row passengers. The CX-50 is not far behind since it shares almost all of its driver assistance, comfort, convenience, or safety technologies with the CX-9.
